Located among the hills of Upper Monferrato at the border with the Langhe, the historical center of town is concentrated on a hill on the left bank of the Tinella Stream, an affluent of the Belbo. The most modern part of the city has, instead, been built on the plain. The ancient town is dominated by the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli. The parish church, built between 1681 and 1701, is in the Baroque style. The structure’s plan has only one nave with five lateral chapels and a large choir section. Inside, among the precious wood furnishings, is the high altar, which is believed to have been built based on the architect Benedetto Alfieri’s design. To further embellish San Pietro in Vincoli is the imposing frieze that runs along the ledge overlooking the presbytery and the choir section, formed by a profusion of gilded plaster depicting more than two hundred little angels.
